Flinders University Library is privileged to provide access to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resources and collections.
Ensuring our collections are culturally safe is an ongoing process. You may find that some of our items, sites, and collections have cultural advice or warnings.
To make our library a safe and enriching place for all members of our community, we encourage you to let us know if you encounter material within our collections that could be deemed inappropriate or offensive. Let us know by flagging a resource for library review. The library will review your request and advise you of the outcome. Our response time will largely depend on the scale or complexity of the item(s) flagged. All submissions will receive a response.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that items in the Flinders University Library collections may contain images, voices, and names of deceased persons. In some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, hearing recordings, seeing images or the names of deceased persons may cause sadness or distress and, in some cases, offend against strongly held cultural prohibitions.
Some material held by Flinders University Library may contain words, descriptions and terms which may be culturally sensitive and that reflect authors’ views, or those of the period in which the content was created but may be considered offensive, derogatory, or racist today and are therefore unacceptable. These views are not necessarily the views of Flinders University. While the information may not reflect current understanding, it is provided in a historical context.
The library’s decision to apply cultural advice, cultural warnings or in some cases, initiate a takedown, will be underpinned by the following principles, frameworks, and advice:
Interacting with resources that contain outdated, misleading, or offensive content can be difficult and potentially retraumatising for members of First Nation’s communities. If you or someone you know is affected by such materials and subjects, support is available:
