Read & Publish Agreements

Open Access is about sharing knowledge freely, breaking down barriers like paywalls. However, publishing isn’t without cost - publishers still need to cover their expenses.

This is where Read & Publish schemes and Institutional Memberships come in. These practical solutions, introduced by some major publishers in 2020, make Open Access publishing more achievable.

Here’s how it works:

  • Think of it like a collaborative grant for publishing. Participating universities, including Flinders University, enter into agreements with publishers. We contribute extra on top of our annual subscription fees to create a shared pool of funds. This pool covers the cost of Open Access publishing for a set number of articles in certain journals across all participating institutions each calendar year.
  • Benefits for Researchers: These agreements enable researchers to publish their work Open Access in selected journals without paying Article Processing Charge (APCs), or at a discounted rate. This ensures their research is freely accessible to a global audience.

However, there are limits to consider:

  • The cap on funded articles is shared by all participating institutions, not just Flinders University. Once the cap is reached for a publisher, researchers will need to pay an APC to publish Open Access.
  • Publisher may also have additional eligibility criteria or impose extra charges, such as page and colour charges.

What does this mean for you as a researcher?

  • Plan ahead: If Open Access is part of your publishing goals, budget for potential APCs in case the cap is exceeded before your article is accepted. Unfortunately, the Library cannot absorb these additional fees on your behalf.
  • Check before you submit: Caps and timelines vary between publishers and agreements. Confirm the status of the agreement before submitting your article. See here for details or submit a Service One Library request for assistance.

The bottom line:
Read & Publish agreements are a significant step towards supporting Open Access, but they’re not a guaranteed solution. Be prepared for the possibility of an APC and factor Open Access into your research planning.

By facilitating these agreements, the Library helps Flinders researchers share their work more widely, and amplify the visibility and impact of Flinders research.
