Read & publish agreements

Open Access Read & publish agreements

Flinders University Library is now piloting a small number of Read & Publish agreements that are intended to support the University’s transition to an open scholarly publishing system.

Read & Publish agreements repurpose the University’s existing expenditure on journal subscriptions to cover both reading and Open Access publishing in that publisher’s journals.

The Library negotiated a small number of Read & Publish deals for the University in 2021. Late 2021,  the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) negotiated pilots for several Read & Publish deals on behalf of the sector. Flinders University Library has assessed each deal offered by CAUL and adopted those that provide a net benefit to the University. We will monitor the uptake and processes associated with the deals during 2022 to determine the fiscal and operational impact of the deals.

Read & Publish agreements allow researchers to publish Open Access, with no Article Processing Charges, when the corresponding author for the article is at a participating institution.

Researchers do not need to change publishing practices. If you choose to publish with one of these publishers, you will be alerted by the journal to the Read & Publish option for Open Access on acceptance of your article. Note that the deals are all subtly different, some do not cover all journals published by that publisher, some cover fully open access journals, others do not. In some cases, additional publication charges may still apply. Not all deals cover all publication outputs.

The table below is a quick glance at Flinders University Read & Publish agreements.  For specific information about each agreement open up each publisher in the drop down menu below.

Author publishing workflow

1. Submit your article to an eligible journal using your Flinders email address. You will need to be the corresponding author and include an affiliation/ byline to Flinders University (see Author affiliation guidelines). In some instances, the journal will require additional identification information such as a postal address

2. Article progresses through peer review

3. When you receive notification that your article has been accepted you will be given the option to select Open Access publishing with no transactional Article Processing Charges

4. Your article is published Open Access under a Creative Commons licence

To ensure Read & Publish applies to your article:

As the corresponding author, list Flinders University as your affiliation and use your flinders.edu.au email address.

Without a Read & Publish agreement, you may be charged an article processing charge (APC). This can range anywhere up to $5000 per article (and occasionally more). The University does not provide central financial support for APCs however, the Library has arranged APC discounts with some publishers. See our webpage for more information on APC discounts.

Why has Flinders signed up to the Read & Publish deals we have?

The R&P deals negotiated by CAUL are being offered on a pilot basis. This is a new arrangement for universities in Australia with implications for workflows and future budgets. While several of the CAUL R&P multi-year deals have a 0% increase in 2022, there are significant increases from 2023 onward, in an environment when the University subscription budget is static. The deals we have entered into provide the ability to assess the arrangement for a range of publishers.
