Library spaces

There are accessible entrances to each library branch for users of mobility aids. For more detailed information on building locations and entrances, view the separate page for each branch: Central Library, Sturt Library, Medical Library, City Campus Library and Tonsley Library.

If you visit during staffed hours, staff at the information desk are happy to provide general assistance including navigation and retrieving items from shelves.

After hours access

Entering the library outside of public access hours requires a current Flinders University ID card (or SAHLN/FMC ID card for Medical Library) to be swiped at the digital card scanner located outside the library doors. Building access is automatically enabled on your ID card. Support workers and carers are welcome to accompany students but will not be able to independently enter buildings after hours.

Sensory Spaces

Sensory Spaces are located within the Central Library (level 1) and Sturt Library (level 3) at Flinders University. The Sensory Spaces provide a low-lit environment with comfortable seating and a wide range of visual and sensory resources to assist with regulation. They support students needing a quiet area to avoid sensory overload or seek sensory input.

FUSA Disabilities Space

Level 1 of Central Library is home to the Disabilities Space (Room 155 on the Northern corridor) which is brought to you by FUSA (Flinders University Student Association). This is a safe and accessible space for students with a disability to connect, study, and unwind. It contains comfortable seating for group or individual use, desk space for use with a personal device, a phone charging station, and a fridge. To request swipe card access, contact FUSA and provide name, student ID number and security number (starting with 26 or 27) from your student ID card.

Assistance animals

Assistance animals are welcome in all Flinders Library branches. For the safety of working dogs and their handlers, this applies only to accredited assistance animals with public access rights.

Postal service

Students with a registered Disability Access Plan are eligible to register for the SendIt service, which is a free service that allows students to receive resources via postal mail as an alternative to borrowing in person.

Alternative format resources

The majority of the library's reading material is available in electronic format to maximise both availability and accessibility. Material required for classes (such as readings) will be supplied in alternative format by Disability Services and students should consult with their Disability Advisor for access to topic related material. We acknowledge that the library holds a wealth of other valuable resources that may still be unusable to people with a print disability. For access to those resources, library members with a print disability can contact the library to request an alternative format. So that staff can assist you, please specify the details of the resource and the format you require it in, as well as indicating that you have a Disability Access Plan. Where available, alternative formats may take several weeks to source and we appreciate your patience with staff as we process these requests.

Adaptive Technology Rooms

Adaptive Technology Rooms (ATR) are provided by Disability Services and contain height adjustable desks and computers equipped with various assistive technologies. Access to the Adaptive Technology Rooms needs to be requested from Disability Services so that permissions can be added to your student ID card, which is swiped against a card reader by the door to allow access. No bookings are required and rooms are available during building opening hours, excluding exam periods.

Room locations

  • Central Library has three ATRs. Room 115 is in the main area of level 1 and rooms 210 and 211 are opposite the elevator doors on level 2
  • City Campus has two ATRS located on level 4 in rooms 419 and 421
  • Sturt Library has an ATR located on level 2
  • Medical Library has an ATR located on the left side just past the library entrance
  • Tonsley has an ATR that is not inside the library, it is located in room 1.34 on level 1

Software and equipment

For more information about which equipment is available library ATR, view the ATR Room Guide.

Note that headphones for Dragon users are not provided for hygiene reasons, please contact Disability Services to borrow a pair.
