Brian Medlin Collection

Brian Medlin (1927-2004) was the Foundation Professor of Philosophy at Flinders University.

This collection, spanning 1970 to 2000, contains press clippings, notes, documents and original correspondence on the Vietnam moratorium, including evidence of charges laid against Professor Medlin in 1970. It also contains articles by Brian Medlin and stories by Timothy Tregonning (his pen name). The collection is also home to his correspondence with British novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch.

In addition to the above, the collection includes Review of Philosophy Discipline papers, and audio tapes and papers recording discussions with Dene Barnett on the philosophy of language.

Brian Medlin was educated at Adelaide University and won a Research Fellowship to Oxford University, where he met Iris Murdoch. An active war campaigner against the Vietnam War, he was imprisoned for three weeks in 1970. He retired from Flinders in 1988, and together with his wife Christine Vick acquired a small property near Horsham, Victoria, where they laboured to revive and reintroduce native flora. Christine continues this project. He continued writing philosophy and corresponding with friends and academics worldwide until his death in 2004.

This collection was given to the Library by Christine Vick in September 2008.
