Flinders University and the library appreciate the generous assistance of donors in increasing the range and depth of information and other research resources made available to our students and staff for teaching and research.
The Library has received several valuable bequests and gifts of money, books, papers, memorabilia and art works. Bequests build on the range of the library’s special collections in making rare, unusual and ephemeral material available for original research and teaching.
Major bequests and donations are detailed below.
Sir Charles Bright was Chancellor of the University from 1971 to 1983, and a Judge of the South Australian Supreme Court from 1963 to 1979. The fund consisted of a donation made by Sir Charles before his death for the establishment of the fund, and other donations subsequently made in his memory.
This fund was used for the purchase, at the Librarian's discretion, of 'rare books, whether original or reproduction, or manuscripts of intrinsic interest or beauty.' The Fund's bookplate is inserted in each book purchased from the Fund.
Items purchased from the Charles Bright Rare Books Fund are held in the Charles Bright Collection in the Special Collections Reading Room.

The Heap Mannam Collection consists of antique furniture, household items, books and works of art. Of particular note are the many examples of high Victorian decorative arts with oriental influences, displaying an English interest in distant imperial territories.
Dr John and Mrs Isobel Mannam very generously donated this collection of valuable artefacts to the University over a period of time in honour of their parents.
Justice Kemeri Murray, a member of the Flinders University Council (1974-1996) and friend of Dr and Mrs Mannam, was instrumental in introducing them to the appropriate University representatives to initiate the collection. Justice Murray subsequently donated some items given to her as gifts by Mrs Mannam to add to the collection.
4-piece sterling silver tea and coffee service embossed with scenes representing the 4 continents amid leave scrolls on scrolled cabriole feet. Richard Hennell, London, 1859.
Silver box embossed with flowers and cartouch monogramed FEH. Gilt interior fitted with inkwell and pen stand. "Sterling & other metals". American? Late 19th Century
The family of Heap or Heape can be traced to the 12th century, and came from France originally. By the 18th century they were wholesale grocers and merchants living near Liverpool.
Joseph Heap (1762-1833) formed a rice importing company called Joseph Heap & Sons. Their ships were known as 'The Diamond H Line.'
Sydney Rankin Heap, to whom most of the items in the Collection belonged, was Joseph Heap's great-grandson. Some items were obtained by his father when he went to Burma for business purposes.
Some of the china and glass was bought by or given to Sydney Rankin Heap when, in 1893, he married Frances Elizabeth Heyworth who came from Chicago. Her grandfather had, at one time, lived in Liverpool and been a close friend of the Heaps. Sydney met Frances when he visited her family when on a business trip to Japan, and he married her on his return. During his time in Japan he bought various items. After they were married, they went on a grand tour of Europe as a honeymoon. They visited and bought items in Rome and Paris and perhaps other European cities. The cut glass in the collection is mostly American and the china is a mixture of American and English.
Sydney did not join the family business, but moved to Wales and bought Mellington Hall and its estate. They renovated the house, and shocked the locals by installing 5 bathrooms at a time when one was considered a luxury. He and his wife led an active and social life whilst farming some 2000 acres, a large farm for Britain at that time. At one point Sydney became High Sheriff of the county of Montgomery.
Sydney and Frances (Fassie) had 5 children. By 1957 the parents had died, Mellington Hall was sold and the contents divided among the children. Mrs Mannam (Isobel), the youngest, and her husband DrJohn Mannam, formerly Manhajm, a mechanical engineer originally from Yugoslavia, came to live in Australia. They had no children. Much of their furniture and other valuables have been given to Flinders University. Dr Mannam added some items to the collection, including the Australian paintings.
- notes taken from a letter from Mrs D.R. Barnicoat of Dorset, niece of Mrs Mannam, March 1998 and Dr Mannam, October 2003.

In 1984 the University received a Bequest from Mr J.M. Main, Reader in History, who had taught at the University since its foundation. In accordance with Mr Main's will, the Bequest is to be used for 'the purchase of books, microfilms, maps and other documents and materials of a like nature relating to Australian history.'
The University Council established a Main Bequest Management Committee to advise it on the Bequest.
In March 1985 the Management Committee agreed with the suggestion of the History Discipline that the Bequest's reference to 'materials ... relating to Australian history' should be interpreted within a relatively broad definition, guided by the spirit of Mr Main's own work.
Within the broader definition of the scope of the Bequest, as outlined above, academic and library staff select the following categories of material for purchase:
Main Bequest items are not separated from the general collections, as this would not facilitate access to the material or its use by the University community. A bookplate is placed in each book purchased from the Bequest.
Suggestions for purchases from the Bequest may be submitted by email to special.collections@flinders.edu.au.
James Millar Main was born in Warracknabeal in the Victorian Wimmera in 1924. He was educated there until he entered Scotch College in Melbourne as a boarder as an upper secondary school student. He studied arts and law at Melbourne University, and subsequently undertook a B.Litt. at Oxford, working with Asa Briggs.
On his return from Oxford in 1952, he taught at Melbourne University in the fields of British and Australian history and philosophy of history. He moved to Flinders University as Reader in History upon its foundation in 1966 and taught here until his death in June 1984, once again specialising in Australian history and 18th and 19th century British history.
His publications include articles in the fields of British and Australian history, contributions to the Australian Dictionary of Biography, and an edited book "Conscription; the Australian debate, 1901-1970". Among his recurring interests were the history of land settlement, legislation about the alienation of Australia's public lands, and the making of constitutions in Victoria and New South Wales. His work on the politics of reform prior to 1832 put him at the cutting edge of that scholarly concern, evident in the 1950s and 60s, to subject the large scale changes of industrialising Britain to local and regional study.
Jim Main made a major contribution to the development of the discipline of History at Flinders, and is still remembered with affection by colleagues and former students.

The Flinders Law Library was officially opened in February 1992.
To establish the collection, the University was assisted by a public appeal which raised almost $1,000,000. Administration of the appeal was undertaken by the Flinders University Foundation, and prospective donors were invited to pledge amounts to be given over a period of five years. Recognition for their gifts was offered to potential donors, including naming rights for the whole library, for a special collection or a particular room, a place on the Benefactors Board displayed in the library foyer, and named bookplates in a number of Law Library books.
Of the amount received, one third comprised gifts of books and two thirds were cash. The appeal closed at the end of 1996.

Flinders University Library is grateful for the generosity of donors that enables the University to add immediate and enduring value to its information resources collection. The Library’s intent is to align collections with the education and research priorities of the University.
The Library is highly selective in evaluating and accepting physical donations to ensure we make the most of our limited resources and space. Donations of material will be considered if they meet the following criteria:
the donation supports the study or research programs of the University, or the Library's Special Collections
the size, format and condition of the donation will not result in unreasonable costs to the University in relation to processing, preservation, or storage requirements
the donation does not carry undue ownership or access restrictions
The Library’s preferred resource format is electronic/online, given the significant advantages of 24/7, remote and multi-user access and portability on mobile devices.
If you wish to speak with a library staff member about donating to the library contact: Officeofthelibrary@flinders.edu.au
With your support we can extend the education opportunities and learning capabilities of our students and researchers by enhancing our library resources.
The Library welcomes the opportunity to discuss donation options and an appropriate acknowledgement and recognition of your donation.
