Tim McDonald Collection

Accessing collections Special collections Tim McDonald Collection

Tim McDonald was Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission in the Australian Embassy in Washington, 1984-1987. During that time he had carriage of the bilateral relationship with the US. This included day-to-day-management of the crisis in the ANZUS alliance, resulting from the NZ Government policy regarding the visits of nuclear-armed naval vessels.

In 2004 Mr McDonald donated to the Library a collection of unclassified documents covering public aspects of the dispute.

The documents are sorted into two series:

  1. A series of more than 600 cables and faxes in chronological order, between the Australian embassy in the US and other overseas missions relating directly to the ANZUS crisis.
  2. A collection of more than 70 other documents, including articles, speeches and reports dealing with ANZUS and tri-lateral relations in the 1980s.

The extent of the Collection is 4 archive boxes, ranging between 1984 and 1987.

For more information please see these lists: Documents and Cables and faxes.
