ORCID (Open Researcher Contributor ID) is a free, unique digital identifier (PID) that permanently links researchers to their professional research publications. Your ORCID is essentially a 16-digit number, mostly expressed as a URL that links to your profile e.g. https://orcid.org/0000-0001-1234-5678. ORCID is fully owned and controlled by the researcher. It doesn’t change, irrespective of funder, affiliation or field of research.
It also allows for integration in key research workflows, such as manuscript and grant submission, and supports automated linkages between you and your professional activities ensuring that your work is recognised.
The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Australian Research Council (ARC) encourage all researchers applying for funding to have an ORCID identifier.
