Why use news sources in academic work?

News articles can be valuable sources in academic research, particularly when you are exploring contemporary issues or looking for real‑world context.

They can help you to:

  • Access up‑to‑date information on events, policies, and emerging trends that may not yet appear in academic literature.
  • Understand how issues were discussed at the time they occurred, including public opinion and social context.
  • Find real life examples and case studies to illustrate a phenomena, concept or theory.
  • Explore multiple perspectives on an issue, as journalists often seek comment from different stakeholders.
  • Find quotes, statistics, images, and commentary that can be used as primary source material.

Search for news
(including newspapers, news websites, news and current affair programs, podcasts, etc.)

If you want to find news article or programs on a specific topic, or event, or person, the best option is to search a news database.

These capture news from a range of sources, including newspapers, newswires, news websites, news programs and videos, podcasts and radio, and more.

The Library subscribes to the following news databases:

What about Google and Google News?

You may come across news articles when searching Google or Google News, however there are a couple of limitations to be aware of.

  • You may be asked to pay to read the full source.
While some news website are free, others may only let you access a certain number of articles for free, and others require a subscription or a one-off payment to access the full-text.
  • Google does not capture a comprehensive range of Australian news.
This can be due to licensing disputes or content being blocked during regulatory disputes.

Find and browse a specific newspaper

Because most newspapers require a subscription, the best option is to search findit@flinders for the title of the newspaper.

If the Library subscribes to the newspaper, follow the link to 'View Online'.

Pro tip: Use Advanced Search for short or common titles (e.g. The Australian)

  1. Click on the drop-down arrow next to 'Any field' and select 'Title'
  2. Click on the drop-down arrow next to 'contains' and select 'starts with'
  3. Type in the title of the newspaper

Find a specific news article
(i.e. where you have the citation)

Sometimes, you might have the citation of a news article that you want to read - for example:

  • You are given the citation of a news article to find, or
  • You come across an article by searching Google and are blocked by paywall to read the full text.

There are a couple of options you can try:

  • Search findit@flinders for the title of the article.
  • If this does not work, search findit@flinders for the title of the newspaper.
You can then access the newspaper and browse or search for the specific article.

Historical news sources

Some of the news databases listed above cover older news sources.
