Accessing collections Collections

The library acquires a range of resources in support of the teaching and research programs of Flinders University. The branch location of print materials reflects courses taught at the respective locations.

We have an extensive collection of online journals, databases and e-book collections.

Central Library collection

The Library collection is divided to differentiate between varying access levels, physical size and special storage requirements. 

7 day loan

7 day loans are interfiled with the central books.

Books

The books collection is spread across 2 floors of the Central library.

The shelves are signposted in WHITE.

Books that are larger than standard size shelving are stored separately with other large books. The location number of large books is preceded with f (folio). These are found on level 2 in front of the journals section and near the 600s and on Level 3 at the start of the books section.

Journals

The journals collection consists of publications of various kinds issued serially, that is, in successive parts over a period of time and generally intended to be continued indefinitely. These include journals, annual reports and some government publications.

Most journals are now available online. A display of recent issues of selected print journals is found on level 1. The rest of the print journals collection is found throughout the Library according to location number.  
The shelves are signposted in YELLOW.

Special collections

Special Collections comprises various collections eg., Rare Book Collection, St Barnabas Collection, Evatt Collection and material not on open access for other reasons. Special Collections is located on Level 3. View the floorplan.

Microform collection

Journals, newspapers, theses and other publications may be received in microform/microfiche. These are stored at URRSA and may be requested to be brought to the Central Library through FindIt@Flinders. Requested items can be read using the reader on level 3 of the library.

Newspaper collection

Many newspapers are found in the microform collection, but up to date copies, or those not yet on microform, are found on Level 2.

Theses

All Masters and PhD theses of current Flinders graduates will be accessible online via FindIt@Flinders. The Library no longer accepts print copies. Some older print copies of theses are kept in URRSA and may be requested via FindIt@Flinders for delivery to one of the branch libraries.

TRC (Teaching Resource Collection)

This collection is located on Level 2. View the floorplan.

Medical Library collection

Books

All books are located in the Book Collection on the western side of the Medical Library.

The Medical Historical Collection is a small collection of pre-1940 books on medical themes.

The Australian Science and mathematics School collection is located on Level 2 of the Sturt Library.

The Flinders University Library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification to organize our collection. It logically breaks all knowledge into 10 categories.
