James Millar Main was a Senior Lecturer and Reader in history, making a major contribution to the development of the discipline at Flinders University. In addition to leaving the generous J.M. Main Bequest used to purchase Australian history items for the library, an archive of Main’s papers were also donated to the University.

The collection comprises 37 archive boxes of papers and manuscripts from the period 1769-90 and 1930-1984.
