Readings and textbooks

Search guides Readings and textbooks

Readings and textbooks are sources that your topic coordinator has carefully chosen to help you learn about the topic.

Some may be set as required, meaning that you need to access them to successfully complete the topic. Others may be recommended or suggested as further reading to help you increase your understanding.

Below is some advice for finding and accessing your readings and textbooks.

Textbooks

There are a few ways you can find out if your topic has a set textbook that you need access to in order to complete the topic.

Before the topic starts: Check the Topic textbooks webpage. This will indicate if a textbook has been set, and suggests different options for obtaining a copy.

One week before the topic starts: This is when you will have access to the topic on FLO. You can either:

  • Check the topic details.
  • Look at the Readings list (see below for details).

Readings

Readings are often set for each week or module or theme of your topic. They may be book chapters, journal articles, videos, podcasts, reports or other sources used by the discipline.

To find a list of these sources, open your topic in FLO and click on 'Readings' from the left-hand menu.

Readings lists will be set up differently to match how the topic is taught, but in general you will see:

  • Sections: These group readings by type (e.g. textbook, assessment), week, module, or subject.
  • Title, author, and publication details: To help you identify the correct source to read.
  • Available at: For books available on the library shelves, this tells you which branch it is located at and the location number.
  • View online: Click on the link provided to access the full-text of the source online.

FAQs

My topic is not listed on the textbook webpage. Does this mean there is no set textbook? keyboard_arrow_up

Not necessarily.

It could be that the details have not been added yet, or that the topic coordinator has not yet finalised which book to set.

Check the topic information on FLO when it becomes available (one week before the topic starts).

If you are unsure, contact the topic coordinator.

I can't see a link to Readings in FLO. Does this mean there are no Readings? keyboard_arrow_up

Not necessarily.

Some topics provide a list of readings in the topic information or within individual modules in FLO.

If a source is listed without a link, you can find it by searching findit@flinders. Simply type in the title and author details.

I'm trying to access an eBook but it says there are too many users. What can I do? keyboard_arrow_up

This is not unusual.

Some eBooks have a simultaneous user limit - this means that only a certain number of people can access the book at the same time.

It is recommended that you:

  • Try again later.
  • When you are able to access the book, download as much as you need (or are able to).
  • If you need multiple chapters or sections but cannot download them all at once, download as much as you can. The limit will usually reset the next day.

If you continue to experience problems accessing an eBook - especially if it is required reading - please contact your topic coordinator.

I have been given the details of a source to read, but no link to it. How can I access it? keyboard_arrow_up

Search findit@flinders.

Below is some advice for finding common types of readings.

Books

  • Example: Hay, I., & Allington, P. (2021). Making the grade: A guide to successful study and professional communication. (5th ed.). Oxford University Press Australia & New Zealand.
  • Search for the title and author: hay "making the grade"
  • Tip: If multiple results are listed, use the publication date, edition, and publisher to identify the correct source.

Chapter from an edited book

  • Example: Meskell, L. (2001). Archaeologies of identity. In I. Hodder (Ed.), Archaeological theory today (pp.187–213). Polity Press.
  • Search for the title and author of the book: hodder "Archaeological theory today"
  • Tip: If multiple results are listed, use the publication date, edition, and publisher to identify the correct source.

Journal articles

  • Example: Frances, L., Quinn, F., Elliott, S., & Bird, J. (2024). Outdoor learning across the early years in Australia: Inconsistencies, challenges, and recommendations. Australian Educational Researcher, 51(5), 2141-2159.
  • Search for the title of the article and the author: frances "Outdoor learning across the early years in Australia"
  • Tip: If the article is not listed, try searching for the title of the journal (e.g. "Australian educational researcher"). Once you find the journal, you can search for the article title or browse the list of years and volumes.
